Welcome to RaspBSD
RaspBSD is a image of FreeBSD 11 that is preconfigured in two different images for Raspberry Pi Computers (and more soon).
What is the difference between the Console Image and the Graphical Images?
The Graphical Images currently only have a VideoCore kernel modules added to them. In the future a GUI and other tools will be preloaded. The console images do not have the VideoCore image and are designed to be used via serial or completely headless.
What is the login credentials for the images?
The username is raspberry and the password is raspberry. The root account does not have a password. Note: Login as the root user is not permitted over SSH.
Where are the packages to install?
Currently work is ongoing to improve the offical FreeBSD packages. `pkg install' should be able to install most packages.
How are these images built?
All images are built using Crochet.
What is a Raspberry Pi?
"The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It is a capable little computer which can be used in electronics projects, and for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also plays high-definition video. We want to see it being used by kids all over the world to learn programming." --The Raspberry Pi Foundation
Where can I get a Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone Black?
Your local electronic shop or an online retailer like Sparkfun.
Where can I get a Banana Pi?
NewEgg or other online retailers.
What about support for the Raspberry Pi Camera?
The Camera is supported, see: https://wiki.freebsd.org/FreeBSD/arm/Raspberry Pi Camera.
How do I use these images?
Note these images will overwrite the entire SD Card!
For Mac users decompress them using Archive Utility and then copy the image to your SD Card by running something like:
sudo dd bs=1m if=FreeBSD-armv6-11.0-RPI-B-r282247.img of=/dev/disk2
Are these images hard float or soft float?
Currently all FreeBSD ARM images are soft float. Work is underway to switch them over to hard float.
RaspBSD is a volunteer project headed by FreeBSD Committer Brad Davis (brd@).
The Goal of this project is to build images easily useable by anyone. Sometimes that means images preloaded with different packages to help new users get started. Initially they will start off pretty basic, but will expand in different directions to support different goals. Initial goals include Education and Entertainment. All of our images are built using publicly available tools and any enhancements will be pushed upstream.
